Introduction to the City

The most striking thing about Chandigarh is the expanse of the resplendent blue sky with the mountains in the backdrop. As you approach the city, you will see the jagged skyline of the Shivalik Hills looming large over the city and the faint image of an old temple dedicated to Goddess Chandi, from which the city got its name.

Chandigarh holds a unique political position as it is the capital of two northern Indian states, Punjab and Haryana, while also being a union territory. The city's modern foundation was laid after the partition of India and Pakistan, which led to the loss of Lahore as the capital of Punjab. Chandigarh was conceived as a symbol of India's freedom. The city was designed by the renowned French architect Edouard Le Corbusier, who envisioned Chandigarh as a city of "Sun, Space, and Verdure" to fulfill the basic functions of working, living, and caring for the body and spirit. Today, the city is home to over half a million people living in conditions considered to be the best in the country.
